Parish Records Melton Mowbray 1810 No 442. James Himan of Welby in this parish, Batchelor & Mary Durrance of Burton Lazars in this parish. Married by Banns 26th November 1810 by Tho Ford Vicar. Both signed by their X in the presence of Charles Smith & Robert Johnson. Charles Smith also signed as witness for another marriage on that day so may have been the Curate. None of the family of Bride or Groom seems to have been witnesses. Also other marriages at that time declared the brides as Spinsters or Widows but not Mary Durrance. Was this because she already had a child and therefore not considered to be a Spinster. | Family: James HIMAN / Mary DURRANCE (F105)

| 649 | Source:- Leicestershire Records Office(LRO)- Burton Lazers Bishops Transcripts 1769 Record was John son of James Durrands by Elizabeth his wife. Phillimores Marriages for Melton Mowbray shows James Durrance and Elizabeth Bealey both of Burton Lazers marriage on 11th Sept 1757. They had several children and the baptizm records in the Bishops Transcipts shows a gradual changing of the surname 1759 James son of James Durrants & Eliz 1761 Thomas son of James Durrants & Eliz 1763 Elizabethd daughter of James Durrands & Elizabeth 1765 Ann daughter of James Durrants & Eliz 1767 Comfort daughter of James Durrands & Eliz 1769 John son of James Durrands & Eliz 1771 Isaac son of James Durrands & Elizabeth 1772 Bailey son of James Durrants & Elizabeth 1776 Sarah daughter of James Durrace & Elizabeth 1780 Mary daughter of James Durance & Eliz Phillimores also show John Durance married Ann Chambers 9 Aug 1790 With the Bishops Transcripts showing:- 1792 William son of John Durance & Ann 1791 Mary daughter of John Durrance & Ann It can be seen how the surname went through various ways of spelling from 1757 to 1791 and finally settling on DURRANCE. This is possibly due to the fact that agricultual workers in those times couldn't read or write and the curate recording baptizms went on pronunciations. There were no recorded Durrands, Durrants or Durrances in the Bishops Transcripts for Burton Lazers prior to 1759, so it is possible that James Durrance moved there after his marriage in 1757. With a small village like Burton Lazers it is unlikely that a James Durrants,a James Durrands,a James Durrace and a James Durance would all be married to an Elizabeth living in a small village at the same time. Therefore it is fairly conclusive that John Durrands and John Durrance are one and the same people. Bailey Durrance is another good example of variation in the name;- Born Bailey Durrants Married as Bailey Durrance Son named Baley Durrans | DURRANCE, John (I388)
