He was tall, baldish and with a white beard - Katy said he never shaved, hence his beard was soft. He had been fair haired with blue eyes. He admired Garibaldi, there is a picture of him in a black velvet jacket with red handkerchief. Tommy, as was known, was illiterate. He married Mary Ann Sringer and thereby hangs a tale (from Majorie Burr). Majorie Burr went to Tommy's funeral as very young girl. She remembers it just like peter Hall's "Akenfield".
